And so began her journey to a career in the craft beer industry... with a first opportunity to work in the homebrew shop of a brewery in Red Bank, one of New Jersey's first craft breweries. Continuing in the industry, Gretchen was able to attend brewing school and after completing the intense 3-month program, found her first official brewing job in North Jersey. Eventually finding her way to Basil T's in Red Bank and much closer to home. There, Gretchen worked as head brewer and would be there for the next 12 years before going on her own. Opening a craft brewery involves an extensive approval process. And takes passion, experience, capital, patience, persistence and the tenacious nature of a Basenji!
Little Dog is a 4-barrel craft brewery, creating small-batch brews, and featuring German-style ales and seasonals. Gesundheit! Altbier and Steinerweiss are their signature beers and as we chatted, Gretchen and her apprentice, Jeff were busily working on today's brews and getting ready for the 'DuckBoy Day' benefit for the Monmouth County SPCA. A pale ale named after Gretchen's Setter. She and her husband have huge hearts and in addition to Quincy, they provide a loving home to a few other rescues as well.
We watched as Gretchen and Jeff started the process... moving and securely clamping the piping and tubing, pouring, checking, testing, tasting. You'll get a glimpse of some of the essential equipment used in the brewing process here in the photos. And check out the boots! Most days, you'll see Gretchen wearing her pink boots at work, as a member of the 'Pink Boot Society' of women beer professionals. Love it!
Today, you can find Little Dog Gesundheit! on tap at Patrick's Pub in Neptune City, Boyle's Tavern in Monmouth Beach, Birravino in Red Bank and more to come!

Little Dog. Small Brew. Huge heart! We arrived at Little Dog Brewing Company a few minutes early for the interview to find Owner/Brewmaster Gretchen Schmidhausler, wrapping up a meeting with a courier company because of the growing excitement for Little Dog's Merchandising line. Cool stuff! We'll tell you more about that later.
Little Dog made it's debut in November, 2014, opening it's doors in Neptune City, NJ, just blocks from the beach... and right smack in the midst of the craft beer craze sweeping the State. A logo inspired by their Basenji rescue named, Quincy, Little Dog Brewing is growing and becoming a force to reckon with. Gretchen tells us she is like a little dog in the game. A small, start up business yes, but not a newbie to the craft beer industry. Before branching out on her own and opening Little Dog, Gretchen was telling us how she always loved beer and this passion motivated her to learn more. A whole lot more!
